'Los mil blancos de los esquimales' received special mention as one of the best books at the Premios Visual VIII Edicion

-- Two other books of the Galician publisher made it into the final qualification round, La isla de los cangrejos violinistas (The isle of the violine playing crabs) and Caja de cartón (Cardboard box).

The illustrated book Los mil blancos de los esquimales (The thousand whites of the Eskimos) received special mention as one of the best books in the Premios Visual de Diseño de Libros VIII Edición in the categories (VIII Edition of the Awards for Book Design by the magazine Visual) in the categories Children and Youth Books and Illustration.

This story from OQO editora – edited in Galician and Spanish - also received the third prize for the Best Edited Book of 2009 from the Ministry of Culture of Spain in the category Children and Youth Books.

The award, which is given by Visual - a prestigious magazine for design -, recognises the best designs of the best edited publications in the four official languages of Spain.

In Los mil blancos de los esquimales (The Thousand Whites of the Eskimos) the author lusa Isabel Minhós Martins portrays the eskimos in a simple way. She shows them in their everyday environment: inside their igloos, crossing the icy landscapes or navigating in their kayaks.

This album not just only carresses the reader with the words, but also with the pictures. Madalena Matoso, in her second collaboration with OQO, depicts this people who live in such distant parts of the world with eyes of innocence. In her compositions she uses the technique of collage to assemble newspaper cuttings, different types of paper and other materials that transform, to the readers amazement, into icebergs, into a storm, a child...

Apart from valueing and commending the work from the Portuguese Isabel Minhós and Madalena Mataso in the actual edition of the Awards for Book Design, the magazine also selected La isla de los cangrejos violinistas (The isle of the violine playing crabs) by Xavier Queipo and Jesús Cisneros and Caja de cartón (Cardboard box) by Txabi Arnal and Hassan Amekan as finalists in the category Illustration. Caja de cartón also received special mention at the White Raven 2011, where it was chosen one of the most beautiful books of the world – according to the Internationale Jugend Bibliothek of Munich (Germany).

In the same way the judges of the competition, which is drawing to its eighth edition, chose La isla de los cangrejos violinistas as a finalist in the category Children and Youth Books.

It´s not the first time that the Awards for Book Design by the magazine Visual give special mention to works from OQO editora. In the edition of 2008 The bear and the crow (Monika Klose and André da Loba) received the Illustration Prize. Likewise the judges also selected A woodland secret as finalist in the category Best Children and Youth Book, apart from two other books: And what can I do? by José Campanari (text) and Jesús Cisnero (illustration) and Who´s stolen the moon? by Mario Catelli and Madalena Matoso.

In the 2007 edition the quality of The great book of animal portraits, The day mother had a face like a teapot, Titiritess, Follow me! (a love story with nothing strange about it) and Oscar the Ostrich was awarded with a special certificate.
